CHAPMAN GRAD THESIS FILM “DONNIE’S TREE” GROWS
ON HOLLYWOOD
Santa Monica, CA June 13, 2005 — “Donnie’s Tree” a
short film about an old man who poisons his wife is making the
rounds in Hollywood, with a lingering effect.
Insung Hwang’s thesis film from Chapman University is all
about the underdog. When Donald’s overbearing wife Carmen
(Angela McEwan) replaces his favorite tree with a Kumquat tree,
he takes revenge by poisoning her. Only problem is, the poison
has a side effect: it's an aphrodIsiac. After a recent screening
at IFP’s Cinema Lounge, audience members found themselves
with a bittersweet taste in their mouths. “It was very human,” said
one viewer. The lead actor Ian Sarsen Druid dives into the character
as if he were reliving his own life. Ironically, Ian never got
to see the final cut of his own movie. Ian died suddenly just before
the film was completed. “Sometimes we hold onto something
for so long whether it’s precious or hateful because that
is the way we understand the world. When we lose that bondage,
it can destroy the ego and sometimes we’ll do anything to
fill the void,.” says Insung.
Insung is currently writing a feature screenplay
about love and bondage. “Donnie’s Tree” has played in Sedona,
Kansas City, and Fort Lauderdale film festivals. It is currently
screening at Women in Film’s Independent Film Series on June
16th. Catch it soon at a festival near you or see the trailer at
